Therefore, when the United Nations and CARICOM hold their second meeting in February 1999, we will look to see how the two institutions can further coordinate and maximize their efforts to assist us as member Governments in placing our peoples on the path of solid political, economic and social progress.

3. In January 1995, CARICOM and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation, which offers opportunities to advance cooperation between the United Nations and CARICOM in a number of areas of critical importance.

Cooperation between the United Nations and CARICOM was considered by the twenty-second meeting of the Standing Committee of Ministers Responsible for Foreign Affairs, held on 13 and 14 May 1996 at Kingston, Jamaica, and by the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, held from 3 to 6 July in Barbados.

The Acting Secretary-General of CARICOM underlined the usefulness of the sixth general meeting, lauding the biennial encounters as invaluable for the review of cooperation between the United Nations and CARICOM, as the general meetings permitted the frank exchange between the partners and facilitated strategic planning for the enhancement of future collaboration.
