With an initial focus on peace and security, the Declaration was conceived as an evolving strategic framework for United Nations-African Union cooperation to improve coordination and cohesion in the engagement of the United Nations system with the African Union and the regional economic communities.

59. The declaration on " Enhancing United Nations-African Union cooperation " , signed by the United Nations and the Commission of the African Union in November 2006 has provided a framework for stronger and more effective cooperation.
