On 3 April, the Special Rapporteur participated in a meeting organized by the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights on the " Agenda for Human Rights " , an initiative of the Government of Switzerland to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Coordinator presented a paper on behalf of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights entitled " A Need for Greater Restrictions on the Use of Improvised Explosive Devices? " The paper considered whether IEDs were inherently indiscriminate and explained legal restrictions on their use in armed conflict.

On 16 and 17 May, the Special Rapporteur participated as a panellist in a conference on " Civil protest and peaceful change: Upholding human rights " , organized by the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
