2. Activities of the United Nations Ombudsman

The terms of reference of the Ombudsman were promulgated in Secretary-General's bulletin ST/SGB/2002/12 and the Office of the United Nations Ombudsman started functioning on 25 October 2002.

Mr. Barkat (United Nations Ombudsman), introducing the report of the Secretary-General on the activities of the Office of the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (A/64/314), said that the newly integrated Office served the staff and related personnel of the bodies listed in paragraph 2 of the report.

1.74 The Office of the United Nations Ombudsman was established in the Office of the Secretary-General, in 2002 by General Assembly resolutions 55/258 and 56/253 to make available the services of an impartial and independent person to address the employment-related problems of staff members, including matters pertaining to conditions of employment, administration of benefits, managerial practices and professional and staff relations matters.
