Achieving the Millennium Development Goals in ways that reaffirm the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples and help them overcome their poverty would also make a major contribution towards preserving the world's environment and nurturing cultural and biological diversity.
وسيسهم تحقيق الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية، بسبل تعيد التأكيد على حقوق الشعوب الأصلية والقبلية وتساعدها في التغلب على فقرها إسهاما كبيرا أيضا في المحافظة على بيئة العالم وتعزيز التنوع الثقافي والبيولوجي.

The objective of the meeting was twofold: to explore and document strategies and practices of transmitting local and indigenous knowledge systems in relation to biodiversity preservation and the sustainable use of natural resources; and to solicit advice and input to the UNESCO programme on linking cultural and biological diversity.

Mr. Langeveldt and Mr. Tamang attended the international symposium " Conserving cultural and biological diversity: the role of sacred natural sites and cultural landscapes " , co-organized by UNESCO, UNU, IUCN, FAO, the secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Forum secretariat.

4. Indigenous peoples are estimated to number between 370 million and 500 million people; they account for 80 per cent of the world's cultural and biological diversity but occupy only about 20 per cent of the world's land surface.
