We have welcomed with satisfaction President Nelson Mandela's appeal concerning the lifting of sanctions against South Africa.

We have recently heard in this forum Mr. Mandela's historic call to end all sanctions against South Africa, a call which must be speedily honoured.
وقد استمعنا أخيرا في هذا المحفل الى النداء التاريخي لمانديلا برفع جميع الجزاءات المفروضة على جنوب افريقيا، وهو نداء ينبغي أن يلبى بسرعة.

Under this item, the Assembly will consider a draft resolution on the lifting of sanctions against South Africa, which was issued today as document A/48/L.2.

Those efforts were in line with current positive developments in South Africa, with the views expressed by Mr. Nelson Mandela and also with the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to remove economic sanctions against South Africa.

Experience in the cases of sanctions against South Africa and Yugoslavia suggests that encouragement of regional cooperation and help with the costs of enforcement can be important strategies in mitigating collateral damage of sanctions.

In this regard, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on 22 October 1994 calling for most sanctions against South Africa to be lifted once a Transitional Executive Council was established (resolution 48/1).
وفي هذا الصدد، اتخذت الجمعية العامة قرارا في ٢٢ تشرين اﻷول/اكتوبر١٩٩٤ يدعو إلى رفع معظم الجزاءات المفروضة على جنوب افريقيا حالما يتم إنشاء مجلس تنفيذي انتقالي )القرار ٤٨/١(.
