Further, a survey carried out the same year indicated that the most common type of marine debris found along the Territory's shores was plastic debris originating from vessels at sea or from nearby landfill sites, most of which are reportedly located near coastal areas.

plastic debris in particular has recently been highlighted by UNEP as an emerging environmental issue, as a result of its potential to release persistent bioaccumulating and toxic compounds and its slow rate of degradation in the marine environment, which has been estimated in the region of hundreds of years.
وقد أشار برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة في الآونة الأخيرة إلى الحطام البلاستيكي على وجه الخصوص بوصفه إحدى القضايا البيئية الناشئة، بسبب قدرته الكامنة على التسريب المستمر لمركبات تتراكم في الكائنات الحية ولمواد سامَّة، وبطء معدل تحلله في البيئة البحرية، الذي قُدِّر في حدود مئات السنين().

As a result of its slow rate of degradation in the marine environment, which has been estimated to be in the range of hundreds of years, plastic debris continues to accumulate, while breaking down into smaller particles and microplastics.

At the Committee's 2nd meeting, on the morning of 24 June, the representative of Norway introduced the draft resolution on marine plastic debris and microplastics set out in the compilation of draft resolutions submitted by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (UNEP/UNEA.1/L.1, draft resolution 9).

17 - تشجع أيضاً الحكومات على اتخاذ إجراءات شاملة لمعالجة مسألة الحطام البلاستيكي البحري والجسيمات البلاستيكية البحرية وذلك، عند الاقتضاء، من خلال التشريعات، وإنفاذ الاتفاقات الدولية، وتوفير مرافق استقبال مناسبة للنفايات الناتجة عن السفن، وتحسين ممارسات إدارة النفايات، ودعم أنشطة تنظيف الشواطئ، فضلاً عن برامج توفير المعلومات والتعليم والتوعية العمومية؛
