1. The present note provides information on the submission of the final report of the Secretary-General on the study on violence against children at the sixty-first session of the General Assembly and follow-up events that have taken place in 2006.

To advance progress in this crucial area, the Special Representative organized, together with OHCHR, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the international non-governmental organization Advisory Council for the follow-up to the study on violence against children, an expert consultation on law reform held in Geneva in July 2011.

With the appointment of Mr. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro as independent expert, the study on violence had entered a new stage, one of whose first activities would be the sending of a questionnaire to all Governments in order to collect information on the subject. The expert had met with representatives of non-governmental organizations, and the process was expected to be open and consultative.

Since the release, in 2006, of the study on violence against children,14 countries such as Swaziland and the United Republic of Tanzania have also completed prevalence studies of violence against children, some focusing specifically on violence against girls.
ومنذ أن نُشرت في عام 2006 الدراسة المتعلقة بالعنف ضد الأطفال(14)، أنجزت بلدان مثل جمهورية تنـزانيا المتحدة وسوازيلند دراسات لانتشار العنف ضد الأطفال أيضاً، ركز بعضها بوجه خاص على العنف ضد الفتاة.
