The fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly is taking place at the dawn of the third millennium, at a time when the gap between the developed and the developing worlds is growing ever larger.

A recent achievement has been the adoption of the Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict and on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography by the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly.
وثمة إنجاز تحقق مؤخرا هو اعتماد الدورة الرابعة والخمسون للجمعية العامة للبروتوكول الاختياري لاتفاقية حقوق الطفل المتعلق باشتراك الأطفال في الصراع المسلح وببيع الأطفال، وبغاء الأطفال، وإنتاج المواد الإباحية المتصلة بالأطفال.

The fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly has helped move the debate forward by recognizing that good governance is governance that is responsible to the needs of the people, based on efficient, participatory, transparent and accountable public service, policy-making processes and administration.

The Assembly was informed that, as indicated in draft reso-lution A/53/L.77, the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly would close on Tuesday, 5 September 2000, in the morning, the fifty-fifth session would open on Tuesday, 5 September 2000, in the afternoon and the Millennium Summit would begin on Wednesday, 6 September 2000.

The fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled " Preservation of and compliance with the Treaty on the Limitation of Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems " .
وقد اعتمدت الدورة الرابعة والخمسون للجمعية العامة قرارا بعنوان " المحافظة على معاهدة الحد من المنظومات المضادة للقذائف التسيارية والامتثال لها " .

22. The fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly in 1999 would be a particularly opportune time to discuss international migration and development, since it is also the year for the quinquennial review and appraisal of the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.
