This has been recognized in international law under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which specify that all detained persons have the right to be informed of their right to legal counsel and to access counsel upon arrest or detention or when charged with a criminal offence and in defence during trial.
