With regard to the prevention and control of marine pollution from shipping and related activities, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL 73/78), and the 1990 International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation (OPRC) have proven effective in the control and management of sea-based sources of marine pollution.
