The Scientific Group's Intersessional Technical Working Group considered the special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on carbon dioxide capture and storage and two reports by the Commission for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (see para. 129 below).

The SBSTA acknowledged that carbon dioxide capture and storage is an option, in the portfolio of mitigation options, for stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, noting that complete carbon dioxide capture and storage systems are in various stages of development ranging from research and development to the mature market stage.
110- وسلّمت الهيئة الفرعية للمشورة العلمية والتكنولوجية بأن امتصاص ثاني أكسيد الكربون وتخزينه هو خيار مطروح، ضمن خيارات التخفيف من المناخ، من أجل تثبيت تركُّزات غازات الدفيئة في الغلاف الجوي، ولاحظت أن النظم الكاملة لامتصاص ثاني أكسيد الكربون وتخزينه تمر بمراحل شتى من التطوير تمتد من البحث والتطوير إلى مرحلة النضج الصالحة للتسويق.

At its 1st meeting the SBSTA decided to adopt the agenda as contained in the above document with two items held in abeyance: item 10 (Special report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on carbon dioxide capture and storage) and item 11 (a) (International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States).

The Agency's Marine Environment Laboratory in Monaco has become a world leader in the use of radionuclides to track ocean currents, as well as in using isotopes to track carbon dioxide absorption in the ocean's surface, an important technique in the study of climate change.

For example, greenhouse gases other than CO2 do not affect ocean acidification. Moreover, the absorption of CO2 into the oceans may, at least in the short-term, help to mitigate the effects of climate change, even though it exacerbates ocean acidification.
