The river begins with the White Nile, with its source at Lake Victoria, Uganda, and runs to the southern borders of Sudan where it is called Bahr al Jabal, passing through the major dams area after which it meets the Sobat river and continues to Khartoum where it meets the Blue Nile coming from Tana Lake in Ethiopia, and after this convergence and up to its mouth the river is called the Nile.

50. A recent partnership with the East African Community has led to the expansion of the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative to cover an additional 15 towns.

The UN-Habitat programme on Water for African Cities and the Lake Victoria Region Initiative are among the partner initiatives endorsed by the African Ministerial Council on Water and regular briefings are provided to its Technical Committee and Executive Committee meetings.

Moreover, with support from the Water and Sanitation Trust Fund, in consultation with host Governments, UN-Habitat has initiated the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative to address the rehabilitation needs of water and sanitation infrastructure in the secondary towns around the lake.
