The Group was originally named the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Restrictive Business Practices but was renamed the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy in 1997.

23. At present, four persons in the UNCTAD secretariat have some involvement in the technical cooperation programme on Competition Law and Policy.

Turning to the important area of helping developing countries in the field of competition laws and policies, he informed participants that the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy would examine at its next session a study on the role of possible dispute mediation mechanisms and alternative arrangements, including voluntary peer reviews.
