First, it was aimed at consolidating activities and achievements in the context of the ECA repositioning, which had started in 2006.

In July 2006, the African Union Summit of Heads of State, in Banjul, the Gambia, endorsed the repositioning of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) to better respond to the continent's priorities, particularly the agenda relating to regional integration.

We welcome the initiative of the Executive Secretary of ECA and commend his vision and the boldness of the proposals he has advanced for Repositioning ECA to improve the delivery of its services to Member States in response to the 2005 World Summit Outcome.

14.1 The revision to the biennial programme plan for programme 14, Economic and social development in Africa, results from Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) resolution 844 (XXXIX) on Repositioning ECA to better respond to Africa's priorities.

Under this agenda item, the Executive Secretary made a presentation based on two notes prepared by the secretariat entitled, " Follow-up to the 2005 World Summit Outcome: ECA's Response " (E/ECA/CM.39/6); and " Repositioning ECA to better respond to Africa's priorities: Note by the Executive Secretary (E/ECA/CM.39/7).

To complete this phase of the repositioning of ECA and comply with the Resolution 844(XXXIX) - Repositioning ECA to better respond to Africa's priorities - adopted by the Conference in May 2006, another level of reform is required to align the intergovernmental machinery with its new strategic orientation and programme structure, including legislative organs and subsidiary bodies of the Commission.
5 - ولإنجاز هـذه المرحلة من عملية تصحيح مسـار اللجنـة والامتثال للقـرار 844 ( د - 39 ) - تصحيح مسار اللجنة الاقتصادية لأفريقيا للاستجابة على نحو أفضل لأولويات أفريقيا - الذي اعتمده المؤتمر في أيار/ مايو 2006 ، يلزم إجراء إصلاح على مستوى آخر لمطابقة الأجهزة الحكومية الدولية مع توجهاتها الاستراتيجية وهياكل برامجها الجديدة ، بما في ذلك الأجهزة التشريعية والهيئات الفرعية التابعة للجنة .
