In his meeting with the Team, the Prime Minister of Lebanon described the land border with Syria as a major issue of concern and expressed the desire that efforts in improving border management be carried out in the framework of tightening security against armed threats, such as smuggling of weapons and personnel for terrorist purposes.
32 - واعتبر رئيس الوزراء اللبناني في اجتماعه مع الفريق المستقل أنّ الحدود البرية مع الجمهورية العربية السورية مسألة تدعو للقلق البالغ، وأعرب عن رغبته في أن تُبذَل الجهود لتحسين إدارة أمن الحدود في إطار تشديد التدابير الأمنية لمواجهة التهديدات المسلحة كتهريب الأسلحة والأفراد لأغراض إرهابية.

With the above information in mind, and further to the receipt of the letter from the Prime Minister of Lebanon (S/2007/396), I recommend that the Council extend the mandate of UNIFIL for a further period of 12 months, until 31 August 2008.

I have received the attached letter, dated 8 May 2008, from the Prime Minister of Lebanon (see annex), Mr. Fuad Siniora, in which he expresses the hope, on behalf of his Government, that the Security Council will respond favourably to the request of Commissioner Daniel Bellemare for the extension of the mandate of the International Independent Investigation Commission to 31 December 2008.

On the basis of the progress so far reported by the Registrar, and following consultation by the Legal Counsel of the United Nations on my behalf with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Fouad Siniora, and with the Commissioner of the Investigation Commission, it is envisaged that the Special Tribunal will commence functioning on 1 March 2009.

With regard to Lebanon, we support the Security Council's continuing efforts to take follow-up actions in response to the terrorist bombing that killed former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and others.
