The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Human Rights Defenders, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and other United Nations human rights mechanisms must support defenders in their efforts to this end.

51. On 11 May 2001, the Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral on human rights defenders wrote to the Government of Equatorial Guinea to request information on this question and on the situation of the human rights organizations which requested legal recognition in the past and are still waiting for the authorities to take their case into consideration.
