Sri Lanka, being an island State, attaches very high priority to the question of the management and conservation of the living resources in our area of special interest and concern, namely, the Indian Ocean, and we actively participated in the high seas fisheries Conference.

In September 2008, an informal meeting took place at secretariat level between the secretariat of the OSPAR Commission, the Authority and the secretariat of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC), which also has regulatory authority over certain high seas fisheries in the proposed marine protected area.

The Antigua Convention requires the Commission to adopt measures relating to technical assistance, technology transfer, training and other forms of cooperation to assist developing countries that are members of the Commission to fulfil their obligations, as well as to enhance their ability, inter alia, to participate in high seas fisheries on a sustainable basis.
وتطلب اتفاقية أنتيغوا إلى اللجنة المذكورة اعتماد التدابير المتعلقة بتقديم المساعدة التقنية ونقل التكنولوجيا والتدريب وأشكال التعاون الأخرى لمساعدة البلدان النامية الأعضاء في اللجنة على الوفاء بالتزاماتها، وتعزيز قدرتها في مسائل منها المشاركة في مصائد أسماك أعالي البحار على أساس مستدام().

Secondly, in December 1993, FAO convened at the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission headquarters at La Jolla, California, an ad hoc consultation on the role of the regional fisheries agencies in relation to high-seas fishery statistics.
