UNESCO also plays an active and long-standing role in setting normative standards in the field of the environment, for example, the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and National Heritage, to which UNESCO provides the secretariat, and the Convention on Wetlands (the Ramsar Convention), for which UNESCO acts as the legal depositary.
