The establishment of the land degradation focal area (LD FA), approved by the GEF Assembly in October 2002 and made operational by the GEF Council in May 2003, coupled with formal designation of the GEF as a financial mechanism for the UNCCD and followed by a memorandum of understanding between the COP and GEF (decision 6/COP.7), offered a major boost to the investment by the GEF in sustainable land management (SLM) projects.
