However, in the light of the Secretary-General’s letter, and assurances from a number of members of the Council, the leadership of Iraq had decided to resume working with the Special Commission and IAEA and to allow them to perform their normal duties in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and on the basis of the principles of the Memorandum of Understanding of 23 February 1998.

The Council had also requested the Mechanism to provide information on possible sanctions violations that might have occurred since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding of 4 April 2002, and to consider issues related to UNITA funds and financial resources that had been frozen by Member States.
