In light of concerns regarding the impact of steady growth of international shipping, the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, in July 2009, approved draft amendments to MARPOL 73/78 to ban the use of heavy-grade oils in the Antarctic area, to be adopted at its session in 2010, and decided to develop a mandatory code for ships operating in polar waters by 2012.
