15. Despite this interpretation by the Constitutional Court, the principle of secularism in Turkey is highly complex, as the following points will illustrate.

22. The principle of secularism and that of freedom of religion and belief may be considered at odds when reference to a person's religion is made on identity papers, a practice that was upheld by the Constitutional Court in its decision of 22 November 1979.
22 - يمكن اعتبار أن مبدأ العلمانية ومبدأ حرية الدين والمعتقد قد حُـرِّفـا عندما يُذكر على بطاقة الهوية دين حاملها، وهي ممارسة أقرتها المحكمة الدستورية في قرارها الصادر في 22 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1979.

64. Article 52, paragraph 2, of the Constitution recognizes the freedom of worship, which is reflected in the principle of secularism provided for in article 1 in fine of the Constitution and in the prohibition of violations of any of the fundamental principles guaranteed by the Constitution.

According to the principle of secularism enshrined in the Constitution, no one can make the basic social, economic, political and legal system of the State depend on religious rules, even partially; and no one can abuse religion, religious beliefs and objects which are considered to be sacred by religion in any manner whatsoever, with the objective of obtaining political or personal advantage or influence.
