1. On 21 May 1997, the Security Council met to discuss how to improve protection for humanitarian assistance to refugees and others in conflict situations.

On 29 September the Security Council held an open debate on protection for humanitarian assistance to refugees and others in conflict situations on the basis of a report of the Secretary-General (S/1998/883).

As described in my report on protection of humanitarian assistance to refugees and others in conflict situations, there has been a disturbing increase in the number and scale of direct attacks or use of force against personnel of United Nations and other humanitarian organizations.

Meeting in May 1997, the Security Council discussed the protection of humanitarian assistance to refugees and others in conflict situations and encouraged the Secretary-General to present a report on ways to improve it.
