The present report has been prepared in response to General Assembly resolution 55/46 of 29 November 2000, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit to it at its fifty-sixth session a report on " Implementation of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development and of the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly " .

The Commission also requested that the Secretary-General submit to it at its fifty-sixth session a comprehensive follow-up report on the issue, taking into account the views of States and the expertise of, and all available information from, authorities and bodies within the United Nations system, intergovernmental organizations and other sources, including non-governmental organizations.

At its fifty-fourth session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit to it at its fifty-sixth session a report on the status of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Optional Protocols thereto under the item entitled " Human rights questions " (resolution 54/157).
