The work programme of the Standing Committee on Developing Services Sectors envisages activities aimed, in particular, at assisting developing countries in developing and strengthening their competitive service sectors, and increasing their exports of services.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Developing Service Sectors: Shipping, at its first session in November 1992, and the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Ports, held in Geneva in October 1993, recommended that TRAINMAR should be extended and strengthened.

1. The Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Ports met from 18 to 22 March 1996 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, further to the recommendation made by the Standing Committee on Developing Services Sectors: Shipping at its second session in July 1994, which was subsequently endorsed by the Trade and Development Board.

At its first session, in November 1992, the Standing Committee on Developing Services - Shipping gave the UNCTAD secretariat the following mandate in the field of ports:

On the other hand, many specific trade and trade-related matters have been considered by the newly established intergovernmental organs of UNCTAD, particularly the Standing Committee on Developing Services Sectors and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Expansion of Trading Opportunities for Developing Countries.

In response to queries from delegates on the database on Measures Affecting Service Trade (MAST), the secretariat explained that it was implemented by the UNCTAD secretariat pursuant to the conclusions and recommendations of the second session of the Standing Committee on Developing Service Sectors: Fostering Competitive Service Sectors in Developing Countries.
