In accordance with article 10, paragraph 1, of the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit, I am pleased to submit this annual report.

The President further announced that he would submit a candidate for appointment to the Joint Inspection Unit to the General Assembly, after holding the consultations described in article 3, paragraph 2, of the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit.

Views were also expressed that the time had come to review the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit and revise it in order to adapt it to the present realities and current objectives of the common system.
ورأى البعض أن الوقت قد حان لاستعراض النظام الأساسي لوحدة التفتيش المشتركة وتنقيحه حتي يتماشى مع الواقع الحالي والأهداف الجارية للنظام الموحد.

The view was also expressed that the time had come to review the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit and revise it in order to adapt it to the current realities and objectives of the common system.

In its resolution 55/230, the General Assembly took note of paragraphs 19 and 20 of the report of the Unit for 1998 (A/54/34); reaffirmed article 20 of the statute of the Joint Inspection Unit and paragraph 182 of Assembly resolution 54/249; and requested the Secretary-General to submit the CEB report on the budget proposals made by the Unit as required by the statute.
