On behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, his Special Representative and Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Ismat Kittani, made a statement.

I have accordingly decided, after consulting with the Government of Tajikistan and others concerned, to appoint Ambassador Ismat Kittani as my Special Envoy for Tajikistan.

Two years ago, my then Special Envoy, Ismat Kittani, concluded that an essential pre-condition for political progress in Somalia was the development of a greater uniformity of approach on the part of the international community.

In his discussions with the Government and UNITA, in which my Special Representative, Mr. Alioune Blondin Beye, participated, Mr. Kittani conveyed to them my concern regarding the status of the cease-fire and the parties' failure to cooperate fully with UNAVEM III. وفي المناقشات التي أجراها السيد كتاني مع الحكومة ويونيتا، والتي شارك فيها ممثلي الخاص، السيد اليوني بلوندين بييه، نقل السيد كتاني إليهما ما أشعر به من قلــق إزاء حالــة وقـف إطــلاق النار وعدم تعاون الطرفين بصورة كاملة مع بعثة اﻷمم المتحدة الثالثة للتحقق في أنغولا.

In that connection, his delegation recognized the contribution made by Mr. Kofi Annan, former Under-Secretary-General for Peace-keeping Operations, and looked forward to working closely with Mr. Ismat T. Kittani, the current Under-Secretary-General.

3. Shortly after Mr. Kittani's arrival in Dushanbe on 14 May 1993, he held several meetings with the President, the First Vice-President, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan.
٣ - وبعد وصول السيد كتاني بوقت قصير إلى دوشانب في ١٤ أيار/مايو ١٩٩٣، قام بعقد اجتماعات عديدة مع رئيس طاجيكستان والنائب اﻷول للرئيس ورئيس الوزراء ووزير الخارجية بطاجيكستان.
