Article 184 of the Code states: " An accused person may only be placed in pretrial detention after being questioned in accordance with the law or after having absconded, where the detention is deemed to be in the interests of the investigation or necessary to prevent the person from absconding, or where it is feared that the person may interfere with the investigation.

37. According to article 22 of the statute, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon may conduct trials in the absence of the accused when the accused (a) has expressly waived his or her right to be present; (b) has not been handed over by the State in which he or she is residing; or (c) has absconded or otherwise cannot be located.
