The Special Rapporteur further sent a joint urgent appeal with the Special Rapporteur on the question of torture to the Government of Iraq expressing concern for the lives of a large number of unidentified persons detained in connection with the murder of Ayatollah Mohammed Sadeq al-Sadr and his two sons.

The delegation met with Sheikh Hashim al-Ahmar, brother of Sheikh Sadeq al-Ahmar and commander of their armed forces, who claimed that most of the people who the Government alleged were in their custody either did not exist or were not detainees, but rather people who had defected from the Government to join the forces of al-Ahmar.
