29. UNCTAD has provided support to African countries in the evaluation of the Uruguay Round results which was carried out before the formal conclusion of the negotiations as stipulated in the Punta del Este Declaration.

26. The Programme continues to contribute to the implementation of the recommendations of the Third Space Conference of the Americas, which adopted the Punta del Este Declaration (A/51/682, annex).

It was also stressed that the evaluation of the results of the Uruguay Round in terms of differential and more favourable treatment for the developing countries, in accordance with part I, section G, of the Punta del Este Declaration, 3/ should be undertaken well in advance so as to provide sufficient time for possible corrective measures.

Although not foreseen in the Punta del Este Ministerial Declaration on the Uruguay Round, 11/ which launched the Uruguay Round in 1986, the idea of WTO was presented by its main proponents as a necessary means for implementing the results of the Uruguay Round within a common institutional framework, as well as for imposing additional multilateral discipline on other countries, particularly on their unilateral trade measures.

On 25 May 2010, in Punta del Este, Uruguay, in the margins of the Fourth GEF Assembly, the Convention to Combat Desertification secretariat signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Forum on Forests to team up in addressing the important institutional gap between drylands and forests, an essential step towards more effective implementation of sustainable forest and land management.
20 - ووقعت أمانة اتفاقية مكافحة التصحر في 25 أيار/مايو 2010 في بونت ديل استي بأوروغواي وعلى هامش الجمعية الرابعة لمؤتمر البيئة العالمية، مذكرة تفاهم مع منتدى الأمم المتحدة للغابات للتعاون في معالجة الفجوة المؤسسية الكبيرة بين الأراضي الجافة والغابات مما يعد خطوة مهمة في سبيل التنفيذ الفعال للإدارة المستدامة للغابات والأراضي.

8. Mr. Apunte (Ecuador), welcoming the adoption by COPUOS of the Chairman’s package proposal on working methods, and hailing the establishment by Brazil and Mexico of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, strongly endorsed the Punta del Este Declaration adopted by the Third Space Conference of the Americas.
